The Hawker Tempest Mk II was a British fighter aircraft developed by Hawker Aircraft during World War II. It was created as an improved version of the Hawker Typhoon, designed to solve the Typhoon’s problems at high speeds and higher altitudes. The Mk II was powered by a Bristol Centaurus radial engine, which provided excellent performance and reliability.
The first Tempest Mk II prototype flew on 28 June 1943. Due to technical difficulties and production delays, the aircraft entered service only after the war in Europe had ended, in 1945. It was originally intended for use against Japan as part of the planned “Tiger Force,” but the end of the war prevented its combat deployment there.
The Tempest Mk II became one of the fastest piston-engine fighters of its era. It was armed with four 20 mm Hispano cannons and could also carry bombs or rockets. After the war, it served with the RAF as well as the air forces of India and Pakistan until the early 1950s.
